Biography of Professor Dr. MP Srivastava, FNASc

Born in village Gaura kalan, Varanasi in 1942, completed MSc in 1962 and PhD on post-harvest diseases in 1966 from the University of Allahabad. In March 1967 joined Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour (currently Dr Rajendra Prasad Agricultural University) but after a short stay he joined Punjab/ Haryana Agricultural University in Dec 1967 and served in various position as Rice Pathologist, Extension Pathologist, Professor, Head Plant Pathology, and Director, Planning, till his superannuation on 30th November 2002, but continued to provide diagnostic and advisory support online to mitigate losses from pest till date.  He is a distinguished plant pathologist with over 50 years of experience, recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions on post-harvest diseases, multiple resistance in rice, and Technology/ knowledge transfer, Plant health clinic, IPM and fungicides. He is a protagonist of plant health clinic, and considered as an architect of extension plant pathology in the country and is remembered for his contribution and innovative periodicals such as Plant Disease Warning, & Plant Pathology Courier among others. Dr Srivastava has created a niche for himself as a leading Extension plant pathologist, Consultant on fungicides, Advisor on plant health/ailments and plant health clinic.

In  recognition of his significant contribution in Technology transfer, he won several laurels, awards & international recognition which include ‘Fellowship of the National  Academy of Sciences’ in 1988,  ‘Best Extension Scientist National Award’ by Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1996 and was invited to deliver a lecture on ‘Technology Flow’ in 7th International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) at Edinburgh  in 1998, and later to deliver a Keynote Address on ‘Plant Pathology Knowledge transfer’ in 8th ICPP at Christchurch, New Zealand in 2003, and to deliver an invited lecture on Knowledge transfer in 10th International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) on Aug 28, 2013 at Beijing, China.  In September 2013, he was conferred Dr Radhakrishnan Award, on 9th February 2014 with International Technological Achievement Award by EET CRS for internationally acclaimed plant protection technology and its dissemination to growers, on 24th November 2014 with prestigious “Rashtriya Gaurav Award”(National Pride Award) in recognition of his life-Time contribution in Plant protection – Technology transfer and Plant Health clinic and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Gold Medal Award 2015 for his significant work on Plant Clinic and Global Food security. Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS) recognizing his massive life–long contribution honored him with prestigious IPS Recognition Award in February 2016 during International Conference organized by Indian Phytopathological Society, 23-27 Feb 2016, New Delhi.




He has played a pivotal role in technology transfer and popularization of plant clinic by delivering invited lectures in India, China 1999/2000, New Zealand 2003, Singapore 2005, Italy 2008, Germany 2009, organizing and chairing an ‘Evening Session on ‘Plant Health Clinic’ in 9th International Congress of Plant Pathology at Turin, Italy in 2008 polarizing world opinion towards creation of organized clinic.  He also  delivered an invited keynote address on ’Plant clinics hold Key to Food Security’ and organized Keynote Session-5 at Beijing during 10th ICPP on August 29, 2013and subsequently Keynote addresses in Hyderabad in October 2014 and Las Vegas  June 2015. On the invitation of Organizers of XVIII IPP Congress, Chaired transfer of Technology, presented a paper in PlantWise Session and acted as Convener of Session in Urban Horticulture and presenting a paper on transfer of technology towards healthy Horticulture. He also presented a paper on food security, during a conference at Cape Town in June 2016. He is a legend who has been honored by International Congress of Plant Pathology and International Plant protection Congress a rare honor ever bestowed to any Indian scientist

Prof. Srivastava, has been President of Indian Society of Plant Pathologists, President of Indian Phytopathological Society (NZ), twice Member House of Delegate of Asian Societies of Plant Pathology, and is currently Senior Vice President of Association of Plant Pathologists of India, Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Plant Pathology, and Member Pesticide Panel of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, Technical Advisor of Pestology, Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and Indian Phytopathological Society & Member of British Society for  Plant Pathology & German Phytomedical Society, among others. Asian PGPR have honored Prof Srivastava with Honorary life membership.

He has guided a dozen of students for PhD on integrated management /biological control of pathogen and noxious weed Parthenium. He has delivered over a dozen of Keynote/Plenary/invited lectures in India and abroad, and has published 180 papers and over 300 popular articles besides 6 booklets and 5 book chapters. Besides scientific conferences, he has also appeared on national television and All-India Radio to deliver talk and conduct panel discussion on diverse issues of plant protection .He has also coordinated and anchored a week-long SATCOM program on Integrated Rural Development, broadcasted from Delhi Earth Station employing INSAT-2A in 1995. His key areas of interest are: Technology transfer, Plant health clinic, integrated pest management and Fungicides.

74 years old Dr Srivastava enjoys providing online cost-free diagnosis and remedies on plant pests through  web portal www.xsgrowth.com and dissemination of knowledge to students/teachers & farmers online and also through contributions in periodicals and conferences in the areas of, knowledge transfer on plant healthcare, food security/sustainability, integrated pest management (IPM),   pesticides and plant clinic.

International Technological Achievements Award Conferred on Dr. M. P. Srivastava

Global consultant on plant health and former Director Planning & Head, Plant Pathology of Haryana Agricultural University, Prof. M.P. Srivastava has been bestowed upon with “International Technological Achievements Award” on February 9, 2014.

The award was given in recognition of his internationally acclaimed contribution on Plant Healthcare Technology and its dissemination towards mitigating crop losses and promoting plant health clinic worldwide. The award instituted by EET CRS, was given to him by presenting a memento and Certificate of Excellence in a glittering function in Noida on 9th of February 2014. Dr Srivastava has shared his innovations in reducing crop losses and strengthening food security at several occasions in India and at International Congresses at Edinburgh 1998, New Zealand 2003, Beijing 2013.
